Winkler Prepared for U.S. Amateur in Colorado

PARKER, Colo. - In what is becoming an annual tradition, the UNT men's golf team will be represented this week when the U.S. Amateur is contested in Colorado at Colorado Golf Club in Parker and Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village.
Senior Cody Winkler qualified for the event last month and is set to tee off the first round of stroke play on Monday at 10:01 a.m., from Colorado Golf Club, and then will tee off the second and final round of stroke play on Tuesday at 3:31 p.m., at Cherry Hills. The champion receives exemption into the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, next year's U.S. Open, next year's The Open Championship (if still an amateur) and a likely exemption to next year's Masters (if still an amateur).
"The experience has been incredible so far," Winkler said. "The hospitality is great and the courses are the best I've ever been to. This is basically amateur golf's major, so to qualify, it's a huge honor to be here and represent UNT along the way. I'm feeling good about my game right now, so I'm looking forward to a great week here and to hopefully take that into this upcoming season."
Winkler played in eight events in his first season with the Mean Green last year and compiled a 75.24 scoring average.
The event will be televised live on Peacock, Golf Channel and NBC beginning Wednesday, with the match play Round of 64, and concluding with Sunday's championship match. On Monday and Tuesday, players will play two rounds of stroke play before the field is cut to 64 for match play, which begins Wednesday. Thursday will feature the Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches, before quarterfinal matches on Friday, semifinal matches on Saturday and Sunday's championship.
