DENTON - The UNT women's golf team will begin its new era as a member of The American after ending a historic run in Conference USA that saw the Mean Green win three straight conference championships on their way out.
UNT will open the season at the second edition of the Sam Golden Invitational, the first of two events the Mean Green will host this year, on Sept. 11-12 at Oakmont Country Club in nearby Corinth. They will also host the sixth annual edition of The Bruzzy, which will be played again at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore, Oklahoma, on March 30-31.
"We host twice this year, which will be fun," head coach Michael Akers said. "The events are named after our two biggest supporters in Sam Golden and Bruzzy Westheimer. We would not be where we are today without their generosity and kindness."
The team will also play in some new events, as they'll head to the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in October, which is a joint men's and women's event in Fayetteville, Arkansas, that will be televised on the Golf Channel. They will also head to The Bahamas for the Nexus Collegiate, hosted by Texas Tech, in February.
The Nexus Collegiate will be sandwiched between the UCF Challenge in early February and the ICON Invitational in Houston at the end of the month, which Akers said will be a key stretch in the schedule.
February will be an important month for us to improve our national ranking," Akers said. "We have three events and all have very solid fields."
UNT will also return to compete at Oklahoma's fall tournament, which is loaded with Big 12 competition, and play in a new match play event hosted by the Sooners in April.
"Our schedule is very similar to years past in terms of difficulty," Akers said. "I will continue to schedule the best in order to be the best. I am very excited to get to the conference championship this year and try to keep our streak alive. It would be amazing to win in our first year in the AAC."
