DENTON — The UNT women's soccer team hosts Northwestern State on Sunday night for its home opener at the Mean Green Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
The match is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
On Thursday North Texas opened the 2023 season on the road with a 3-0 victory at UNLV. Sunday will be Northwestern State's first match of the year.
The last time UNT and the Lady Demons met they opened not just the 2019 season but they also opened the then new Mean Green Soccer and Track & Field Stadium. North Texas defeated Northwestern State 7-0 in the 2019 match.
The Mean Green have been extremely successful with home openers over their 28 previous seasons.
UNT enters Sunday's match 25-2-1 all-time in season home openers.
North Texas has won five consecutive home openers. Last year they defeated Abilene Christian 5-1 in its home opener. A nationally ranked Arkansas in 2017 and Kansas in 2015 are the only two teams ever to beat UNT in its first home match of the year.
From the Mean Green's inaugural season in 1995 through 2010, UNT won every single home opener. They drew Oral Roberts, 2-2, in 2011.
UNT assistant coach Alexsis Cable earned her master's degree from Northwestern State while she was a graduate assistant for the Lady Demons from 2017-18 before going to Nicholls and being an assistant and head coach for the Colonels.
