DENTON — The UNT women's soccer team defeated Abilene Christian 5-1 Wednesday night in a preseason friendly at the Mean Green Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
North Texas got the goal scoring started early with a 15th-minute goal by sophomore Kat Burnell to put the Mean Green up 1-0.
UNT tacked on two more goals in the first half. The first goal was from freshman Alexis Miller who converted on a penalty kick in the 31st-minute and then five minutes later sophomore Summer Brown ran nearly the length of the field before beating the ACU keeper to put her team up 3-0.
In the second half, UNT newcomer Bailey Wesco scored twice — the later a penalty kick.
"I thought we showed we have a dynamic goal-scoring team," Wesco said. "We have a lot of depth all over the field and we're just getting started. We haven't played that long together yet."
North Texas outshot the Wildcats Wednesday night 20-6, Wesco led all players with five shots and Burnell was not far behind with four.
Wednesday's friendly featured a 30-minute lightning delay early in the second half and then in the final five minutes a downpour of rain.
Next up for the Mean Green, who are entering a new era as they moved into the American Athletic Conference this summer, is their season opener on Aug. 17 at UNLV. Kickoff is scheduled for 8pm CT from Las Vegas.
