CORINTH, Texas - The UNT women's golf concluded the season-opening Sam Golden Invitational on Tuesday at Oakmont Country Club and took second place in the event while also rewriting the program record book in the process.
UNT shot a 278-281-270 for a three-round score of 829 and finished at 35-under par behind - 13 shots back of Houston and eight shots up on third-place UTSA. The opening-round 278 set a new program record for 54-hole score vs. par (-10) and then that mark was shattered in Tuesday's final round with the 18-under 270. The 35-under 829 also broke the 54-hole program mark by 11 shots, set previously at last season's ICON Invitational.
The Mean Green were led by senior Shreya Pal, who finished tied for fifth at 11-under par for a career-best finish. Junior Ellie Roth tied for seventh at 10-under, and freshman Bouquet Subsomboon led the team on Tuesday with a 6-under 66 to cap off her collegiate debut and earn a T10 finish at 8-under par.
"Our finish was very impressive," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Credit goes to Houston for playing great, but we shattered school records and played the golf course. I know some people questioned where UNT would be in the post-Audrey Tan era. We loved Audrey, but this week proved that we are very good and will keep bringing in hard working golfers who can go low. I am very pleased with Shreya. She was the coach's pick and has not been 100% for a while but she is so talented and has a great mental game. Ellie played solid, as we expected and Bouquet made a very good showing in her college debut. We hope to take this momentum to OU and play solid there."
Akers said he was pleased with the second edition of the Sam Golden Invitational and was happy to have the tournament's namesake and his wife, Valerie, in from Houston for the event.
"I am very excited about our finish at our host event this week," Akers said. "The event itself ran extremely well. We are very thankful to the Golden family for their incredible support for this event, as well as our program overall. Sam and Valerie are very generous and bring a positivity to us every time we see them. The Oakmont Country Club proved to be a great host facility. The level of service was first class, and we hope to host there again."
Another record that went down on Tuesday was the program's all-time career eagles mark, as senior Emilie Ricaud moved into the top spot with her eighth on Tuesday after her seventh on Monday tied the mark that was previously held by Randi Gauthier (2000-03).
The team's other freshman, Katharina Anglett, also had a nice collegiate debut, tying for 19th place at 5-under while competing as an individual.
UNT will return to action on Sept. 23-25, as they travel north of the Red River to play in the Sooner Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma.
