Schooner Fall Classic
Belmar Golf Club | Norman, Oklahoma
The UNT women's golf team will look to follow a successful season-opening showing at its host tournament, the Sam Golden Invitational, with a trip to Norman for the Schooner Fall Classic, hosted by Oklahoma.
Â
THE EVENT: Belmar Golf Club will play as a par-70 course at 6,182 yards. The teams will play 18 holes per day, beginning on Saturday and concluding on Monday with the final round. There will be tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, 9 a.m., on Sunday and 8:30 a.m., for Monday's final round.
Â
THE FIELD:Â There are 15 teams participating in the tournament:Â Florida State, Houston, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas State, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, TCU, Texas State, Tulsa, UNT, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Shreya Pal, Ellie Roth, Mason Lewis, Katharina Anglett and Bouquet Subsomboon. Anglett will be making her team collegiate debut after a strong showing at the Sam Golden Invitational as an individual.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on Golf Genius. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
GIVING BACK: One of head coach Michael Akers' favorite things about this event is the charitable aspect, as teams visit the OK Kids Korral, which is part of the Toby Keith Foundation, to meet with families being affected by pediatric cancer.
"The charity component of the event is great for our student-athletes to witness," he said. "We will tour the OK Kids Korral and interact with families battling pediatric cancer. It certainly is an eye-opening experience and makes us all realize how fortunate we are."
 Â
AKERS SAYS: "The field at OU will be very strong. I am very familiar with the course and feel we can take the momentum of going low at the Sam Golden and pick up some key wins this week. Mason Lewis has really stepped up her game in qualifying this week and she actually led the team at OU last year. Kat (Anglett) makes her first appearance in our starting five, and that was just a matter of time. She is going to be an outstanding college player."
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over eight years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for three straight NCAA Regionals on the heels of three straight conference championships.
UP NEXT:Â The Mean Green head to the Blessings Collegiate Invitational at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Oct. 2-4. The event is unique in that is a joint men's and women's event, and UNT's men's team will also be competing. It will also be broadcast live on Golf Channel.
Â
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
