Silwal, Garner lead Mean Green women’s and men’s teams, respectively
DENTON, Texas – Aditi Silwal and Mason Garner led UNT cross country to a pair of seventh-place finishes Friday at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas.
Â
"I was very, very pleased with both sides," UNT cross country coach Erik Stevens said. "A complete turnaround if you look at it from one year ago today."
Â
In the first 8K of the season, Garner led the men's team with a 25th-place finish in a time of 25:02.5. Alan Proenza followed in 32nd place with a time of 25:12.2, while Luke Canon placed 40th (25:24.1), Jake Meyering finished 54th (25:36.2), Connor Bartek took 60th (25:41.8), Hardy Swann finished 72nd (25:58.6), and Jake Johnson placed 73rd (25:59.9).
Â
"The first 8K for the men was very solid," Stevens said. "We executed pretty perfectly. The freshmen were all under 26 minutes, so I'm very pleased with that. That's a hard thing to do in your first 8K. I'm really happy with where we're at in this point in the process. Once we get to that next phase of training, it's all going to start popping a little bit more and get things going in an even better direction for us."
Â
Silwal led the Mean Green women's team for the second-consecutive meet, recording a 5K time of 18:35.3 to finish in 20th place. Trinity Trotter placed 24th with a time of 18:41.5, Tiblets Abreha finished 40th with a time 19:08.0, Marisa Jacober took 69th with a time of 19:47.3, and Addison Sykora finished 105th with a time of 21:45.6.
Â
"On the ladies' side, our top end executed very well," Stevens said. "We put it together to run basically the exact times that they ran, and they executed perfectly. I thought they could do exactly that, and they did. I'm very happy with the ladies' performance. They ran as confident as I've ever seen our ladies run since I've been here, so I'm really pleased."
Â
Next up for UNT cross country is the Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday, Sept. 23 in Stillwater, Okla.
Â
"If we just stay true to what we're doing over the course of the next three weeks and let that come naturally with the paces that we're going to be touching in this next phase, we're going to be where we need to be when it counts," Stevens said. "Looking ahead, the Chili Pepper (Sept. 29) is kind of the next big meet that I want to put things together to go and try to attack and see where we're truly at for the season. In about three weeks, I think we'll be feeling a good solid shift and a good pop in results."
