The staff will donate $3 for every made free throw in Sunday's game
DENTON, TEXAS – Jason Burton and the UNT women's basketball staff announced it will participate in a fundraising initiative for the Denton community during Sunday's game against Wichita State in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The program has promised to donate three dollars to The Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center in Denton for every made free throw against the Shockers. In addition, Burton will be donating one dollar for every free throw made in home games in the month of February in recognition of Black History Month. The center is a five-acre park that includes a playground, soccer field and recreation center.
"I think it's one thing to say you want to make an impact and another thing to do it, especially monetarily," Burton said. "That recreation center is a park that serves our community and it's also named after Martin Luther King, who was so pivotal for all of America. A lot of the quotes I use in my life and try to live by are from him. He had an impact on us and in return we want to give back when we can. We hope that this will inspire other people to give as well."
So far this season, North Texas has excelled at getting to the foul line. The Mean Green rank second in the country with 27.2 free throw attempts per game and average 18.0 made free throws per game. In three games of conference play, UNT is averaging 14.3 free throws per game.
"From the beginning we have talked about community impact," Dr. Leah Foster said. "Our team is invested in not only the cultural impact on campus, but in the city of Denton. So, any way that we can serve our community we want to be a part of that."
