Mean Green looking forward to first season in the American
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's tennis team will continue its season of firsts on Saturday as they host McNeese and Southeastern Oklahoma State in the initial two contests of the 2024 spring dual season under first-year head coach Amanda Stone.
The Mean Green, who will be competing in the American Athletic Conference for the first time in program history, look to start the season off with a bang as they take on McNeese at 11:00 AM and Southeastern Oklahoma shortly after at Waranch Tennis Complex.
UNT is coming off a successful fall season in which they finished with an 80-64 overall record, highlighted by a solid showing in the ITA Regional.
The 2023-24 roster consists of four returners from last year's squad, including Olivia Malm who finished third on the team in 2023 with a 10-5 record in singles play, including an impressive 5-1 mark at line three.
In addition, Olivia Halvorsen returns for her second season with the Mean Green after posting a team-best .857 winning percentage in 2023, going 6-1 before missing the second half of the season due to injury.
The Mean Green also return Marina Adati and Stadfany Nformi who combined for six singles wins a season ago.
UNT also welcomed four newcomers to the squad for the 2023-24 season, including Carolina Laydner and Stanislava Shulzhenko who both tallied double-digit wins in singles play in the fall.
Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz, who both had key victories throughout the fall season as well, round out the eight-member squad for the Mean Green.
The first matchup of the season for UNT will see the Mean Green take on a McNeese team that has posted a 3-1 record thus far this season, with their lone loss coming to fellow AAC school Tulane.
The Cowgirls finished the 2023 season 15-6 overall and advanced to the semifinal of the Southland Conference Tournament.
Following the contest against McNeese, UNT will turn its attention to traditional DII power Southeastern Oklahoma. The Savage Storm won the Great American Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year in 2023.
Both of Saturday's matches as well as all home matches this season will be live streamed with live stats available on MeanGreenSports.com.
