1/30/2024 1:47:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team will look to make more program history when it takes on UTSA in San Antonio Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
Coming off Sunday's 87-72 victory over UAB that gave UNT the outright lead in the American Athletic Conference and its seventh-straight victory, the Mean Green have a chance to break the program's longest conference winning streak against the Roadrunners. A victory would also match the longest win streak overall in North Texas women's basketball history at eight games, which the team has already done once this season.
DesiRay Kernal will lead the Mean Green into San Antonio after earning her second AAC Player of the Week honor on Monday. She tied a career high with 28 points against the Blazers and averaged 23.5 points, seven rebounds and four assists in two victories last week.
UTSA is led by Karen Aston, who spent one season leading the North Texas program in 2011-12. The Roadrunners are 10-9 this season, but have victories over Charlotte and South Florida at home this season.
Wednesday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Lincoln Rose and Carlie Heineman on the call. The game can also be heard on the Varsity Sports Network with Zac Babb.
WHAT 2 WATCH 4
• North Texas' seven-game win streak will be put on the line against a UTSA team that has already defeated Charlotte and South Florida.
• A win for the Mean Green will set a new program record for longest-conference winning streak.
• UNT took sole possession of first place in the AAC with its 87-72 win over UAB. It's the first time since 1985-86 that the Mean Green have held the conference lead this late in the year.
• DesiRay Kernal earned her sixth weekly conference honor of the season as she was named the AAC Player of the Week on Jan. 29 after averaging 23.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in wins over Tulane and UAB.
SERIES HISTORY
• North Texas and UTSA will meet for the 36th time in series history Wednesday night.
• UNT has won 23 of the 35 matchups all-time.
• UTSA is the fifth-most played opponent in UNT's program history.
• North Texas had won seven in-a-row against the Roadrunners prior to last season's overtime loss on Feb. 20.
• The Mean Green are 9-7 in San Antonio and have won the last three meetings at the Convocation Center.
CAUSE YOU'RE LOOKING AT A WINNER
• Both Dyani Robinson and DesiRay Kernal are two of the winningest players in the country regardless of the division.
• Kernal has won 99 games she has appeared in over her five seasons of college basketball. In total, she has played in 133 of 134 career games, making her career winning percentage 74.4%.
• Robinson is not far behind her teammate with 91 career wins. Of note, Robinson missed the final 16 games of the 2022-23 season with a torn ACL.
FEAR THE FRONT COURT
• The frontcourt duo of Tommisha Lampkin and DesiRay Kernal has been one of the best in the conference and the country. While leading UNT in scoring and rebounding, arguably their most impressive trait has been their ability to score efficiently.
• Lampkin and Kernal rank first and second in the American conference in field goal percentage this season. Lampkin is shooting a career-high 67.4%, which ranks her No. 4 in the country, while Kernal is at 54.6%. (No. 45).
• UNT is one of four Division I teams with the top two field goal percentage leaders in their respective conference. The other teams are UConn in the Big East, Princeton in the Ivy League and Fairfield in the MAAC.
