HOUSTON – UNT visits preseason conference favorites Rice at Tudor Fieldhouse on Friday at 6 p.m. before it hosts UTSA on Sunday at 1 p.m. from the UNT Volleyball Center. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Mean Green (6-9, 3-1) swept the season series last season with two five-set home wins, to mark the first two-win season over the Owls (9-4, 4-0) in program history. UNT trails the all-time series 8-19 against Rice, with its last road win on Nov. 7, 2014.
In 2023, the Mean Green shocked the Owls after a pair of 3-2 victories at the UNT Volleyball Center. Then-junior Aryn Johnson led UNT with 30 kills, 84 attacks and 34.0 points over ten sets. As a team, the Mean Green held the Owls to a .197 hitting percentage while it nearly doubled Rice's total blocks at 30-16.
UNT will finish the weekend against conference rivals UTSA (6-12, 0-5) after it collected a four-set victory on Sept. 27. The Mean Green own a 4-1 record against the Roadrunners during the Kristee Porter era. UNT holds a 10-8 record in home matches but trails the all-time series 18-22.
On Sept. 27, the Mean Green defeated the Roadrunners 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 26-24) in comeback fashion after dropping the first set. UNT posted 12.0 total blocks, its second-best mark of the season, versus UTSA with freshman Ryann Vik establishing a career-high mark of seven blocks. She was supported by middle blocker Priscilla Jones with five blocks and outside hitter Aryn Johnson at four stops.
