DENTON - UNT women's golf coach Michael Akers announced on Wednesday the hiring of former Mean Green standout Lauren Cox as Director of Ops/Assistant Coach.
Cox, who graduated from UNT in 2021, was the original standard bearer for the program's rise to national prominence since Akers' arrival in 2016, when Cox joined the program as a freshman from Orange, in southeast Texas. She served as a volunteer assistant coach for two years after graduation while earning status on the LPGA Epson Tour.
She finished her playing career in Denton as the program's all-time leader in single-season scoring average (twice), career scoring average, season and career par-or-better rounds and season and career birdies, while becoming the first player in program history to earn first-team all-conference honors three times.
"I am thrilled to have Lauren Cox join us again as a member of the coaching staff," Akers said. "She has served as a volunteer coach for a couple of years while she was playing professional golf. Lauren has been a tournament coach and been a great mentor for our players. She was a major contributor to our program moving up the rankings from 200 to a consistent top 50 team. Lauren Cox is UNT Golf and will have a great impact on this team."
Cox said she is looking forward to starting her coaching career in the place where her golf career took off and helping to continue the upward trajectory of the program.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to join the UNT Women's Golf coaching staff," Cox said. "Coach Akers is a great coach that truly cares about his players. He has helped me in every part of my career, and I am excited for the opportunity to work with a team that has meant so much to me. It's amazing to see how the program has grown, and I'm looking forward to being a part of it."
Akers said Cox will fit seamlessly into the existing staff of he and assistant coach Kaeli DeSerrano and structure of the program and allow him to change roles for the best.
"I am going to structure responsibilities between myself, Kaeli and Lauren, keeping in mind everyone's strengths," Akers said. "Our future is very bright."
