Freshman Ryann Vik drops career-high 10 blocks in four-set victory
DENTON, Texas – Mean Green Volleyball captured a 3-1 win over Tulsa after it dropped the fifth-most total blocks in modern program history on Friday night at the UNT Volleyball Center.
"Any time you get a win in conference it's a great feeling," head coach Kristee Porter said. "Our conference is tough, every night it's a battle and there are no easy nights."
The Mean Green (8-10, 5-2) finished the match with 17 total blocks as it moved into a two-way tie for third place in the American Athletic Conference after its four-set (25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21) victory over the Golden Hurricane (12-7, 4-3) on Friday.
"We came into this game very hyped up," UNT freshman Ryann Vik said. "We were tied with [Tulsa] in the conference, and we wanted to come in, especially at home, and show them who's boss."
Vik led the block party against Tulsa as she recorded a career-high 10 total blocks, the first UNT freshman with double-digit blocks since Alysha Johnson (2019-21) collected 12 at FIU on Nov. 1, 2019. She also became the tenth UNT player in the 25-point rally-scoring era with 10-plus blocks in a match and first since Taylor Litteken (2022) dropped 10 at FIU on Sept. 25, 2022.
Senior Aryn Johnson tallied her fourth double-double of the season with a team-high mark of 10 kills along with 11 digs. For the season, she leads the team with 190 kills and ranks 10th in The American at 2.92 per set.
"Today I could see the things that we've been working on being applied in the game," Johnson said. "We're taking the things that we're learning in practice and actually implementing them."
Setter Kamryn Scroggins posted a team-high 16 assists and 12 digs as she recorded her fifth double-double of the season while she added three aces. In 15 of 18 matches this season, Scroggins has led the Mean Green in assists.
Junior Payton Van Veen led the team with 13 points, her seventh double-digit point total over the past eight matches, with eight kills, six blocks and two aces. In conference play, Van Veen leads the Mean Green with 86.5 points and 75 kills.
