DENTON — The UNT soccer team lost 2-1 Sunday afternoon at home to South Florida.
The Mean Green (7-5-3, 3-3-1) leveled the score in the 24th minute when sophomore Lily Cunningham scored her first career goal on a strong left footed shot a top the box that caught the Bulls' (10-2-3, 5-1-2) keeper slightly off her line and placed it perfectly where she couldn't reach it.
However, the tie score lasted just five minutes as USF retook the lead, this time for good.
In the second half, South Florida limited the Mean Green's chances by crowding the attacking areas and holding the nation's leading shots per game team to no shots on target in the final 45 minutes.
"It's unfortunate on the 2-1 loss," said head coach John Hedlund. "I thought overall we were the better team today. We controlled the game, possession, shots on goal and had the better chances throughout the game but in the end their number 12 was the star of the game and put two in on our defense and somehow they come away with a win."
South Florida's Sadie Sider Echenberg scored both of the Bulls' goals on four shots. It was the sophomore's first career brace.
UNT entered Sunday averaging better than 24 shots per game and finished its match against the Bulls with just 14, which is its fewest in its last seven matches.
Next up for the Mean Green is a road match at Charlotte on Thursday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
