DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team will host reigning Sun Belt Conference regular season champion Appalachian State on Dec. 20 as part of its upcoming non-conference slate.
The Mean Green will make a return trip to the Mountaineers during the 2025-26 season. Tipoff for this season's matchup at the Super Pit is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
This season's game in Denton will be just the second ever meeting between the two programs and will be exactly 34 years to the day from when they last played on Dec. 20, 1990, in Honolulu, Hawaii. North Texas was victorious in the previous meeting, 95-83.
Appalachian State enters this year coming off a 27-win season and won the Sun Belt Conference regular season title with a 16-2 league record. The Mountaineers last season notably defeated Auburn during the non-conference and beat James Madison twice during league play. JMU went on to win the 2024 SBC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and then beat Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Duke in the Round of 32.
This season's Dec. 20th matchup between the Mean Green and the Mountaineers features two teams that earned bids to the 2024 National Invitation Tournament.
UNT defeated LSU, 84-77, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the first round of the 2024 NIT before falling to Seton Hall on the road in the second round, 72-58. The Mountaineers lost to Wake Forest in the first round of last year's NIT, 87-76.
When the two sides tip off in Denton this upcoming season, they will look different from last year. The Mean Green have 10 new players while Appalachian State has added 13. UNT has lost four starters from last season's squad and the Mountaineers are replacing all five starters, including their top three scorers.
Mean Green fans might recognize one of App State's newcomers as former Charlotte guard Jackson Threadgill is now playing for the Mountaineers. Threadgill made 73 career starts for the 49ers and made 91 3-pointers in his four seasons in Charlotte. Dec. 20 will be his third trip to the Super Pit. He's averaging 6 points per game at the Super Pit.
UNT newcomer Latrell Jossell and App State newcomer Jalil Beaubrun were teammates at Stephen F. Austin for three seasons. Jossell averaged better than 11 points per game over his three seasons at SFA and made 192 3-pointers.
Appalachian State is led by head coach Dustin Kerns who is in his sixth season at the helm of the Mountaineers program. App State had nine straight losing seasons prior to Kerns arrival and in just his second season he led them to the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers have finished .500 or better every season under Kerns.
The 2024-25 UNT men's basketball season starts Nov. 5 with a home game versus Evansville at 7 p.m. CT. Season tickets and individual game tickets are on sale now.
