After the Pirates won the second set, the Mean Green harnessed the momentum for a wire-to-wire third set victory in which Van Veen and Vik each posted four kills.
In the fourth, the two programs traded blows before ECU edged out UNT despite a late charge that pulled the Mean Green within one point on three separate occasions.
With a pair of early kills, Van Veen helped UNT build a 6-1 lead in the fifth before the pendulum swung back into the Pirates' favor to hang on for the five-set victory.
