DENTON - UNT women's golf coach Michael Akers announced two additions to his program on Thursday as the ninth-year head coach added two international student-athletes, both of whom will join the program next year.
The Mean Green will add Japan's Marin Fujiyasu and Victoria Georgieva, from Bulgaria, and both are set to join the program in August 2025, after both signed their national letters of intent. Both have been committed to UNT since January.
"I am thrilled to sign Victoria and Marin," Akers said. "This is arguably the best recruiting class I have ever signed. Both players have a great work ethic and possess the personality I like. I am very proud of all the teams that I've put together over the years and the comments I receive about the way they conduct themselves.
"Both players want to play at the next level," Akers added. "That has been a key to my success over the years. People comment to me often about seeing our players at Bruzzy's. Most of the time they are there on their own time, as they want to be the best they can be."
Fujiyasu hails from Hiroshima, Japan, and has several strong showings under her belt, including a win at the HermStrong Junior Championship in San Diego, when she shot a career-best round of 65 en route to the victory. At the high school level, she won the 2024 Hiroshima High School Golf Championship with a 72-66 and the 2023 Chugoku Region High School Golf Championship. She was also the MVP at the American School of Bangkok, where she was a classmate of current UNT golfer Bouquet Subsomboon.
Georgieva is from Sofia, Bulgaria, and has a goal of becoming the first professional Bulgarian golfer - male or female - on any pro tour. She has 11 top-10 finishes and five wins in 21 counting events on her world amateur golf ranking profile, including recent wins in Bulgaria and strong showings at the Junior Orange Bowl International in Florida and the Pacific Northwest Women's Amateur (17th in both American events).
Coach Akers on Marin Fujiyasu...
"Marin has an incredible golf swing and can go low. She has a vast amount of international playing experience. Marin visited UNT and blended in perfectly with our players. She is a great fit for us."
Coach Akers on Victoria Georgieva...
"I watched Victoria at Doral last year. I witnessed her work ethic and it was impressive to say the least. She has a nice swing and solid short game. She wants to improve and is committed to do so."
