Mean Green Head West to Face New Mexico
11/29/2024 5:41:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team resumes nonconference play with a road test at New Mexico Sunday at 2 p.m. CT in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Mean Green have won their last three following their only setback of the season so far, which came on Nov. 12 against an Oregon squad that is now ranked No. 21 in the Associated Press Top 25. Two of the three wins for UNT have been on the road, including its last time out when it knocked off Houston, 69-53, for the program's largest road win at a Power Four opponent ever.
UNT made a change to its starting lineup against the Cougars, putting Aniyah Johnson in the front court alongside Tommisha Lampkin for her first start since Feb. 9, 2023. It was the third different starting lineup for the Mean Green this season, which is more than they had all of last season.
North Texas will be put to the test against a New Mexico team that has surpassed the 20-win mark in each of the last three seasons under Mike Bradbury. The programs have not met since 2012 when New Mexico won 89-51 in Albuquerque.
Sunday's game will be streamed on the Mountain West Network and can be heard on the Varsity Network App with Zac Babb on the call.
WHAT 2 WATCH 4
• The Mean Green put a three-game win streak on the line at New Mexico.
• Jason Burton will look to earn the 200th win of his head coaching career against the Lobos.
• Tommisha Lampkin was named to the AAC Honor Roll Nov. 25 after averaging 17 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in two games last week.
• Desiree Wooten is coming off a big performance against Houston that featured a career high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
• UNT's roster features seven returners from last season and six newcomers, including two true freshmen.
ANYBODY ON ANY NIGHT
• UNT women's basketball had never had three players score 20+ points in a game until Nov. 4, 2024 against Alcorn State.
• Kyla Deck (27), Tommisha Lampkin (23) and Desiree Wooten (20) became the first trio to accomplish the feat in program history
• UNT is one of two teams (Oral Roberts) to have three players score 20+ points in a game so far this season, and it was only done a total of 19 times in the 2023-24 campaign.
• Following Jaaucklyn Moore's 20-point performance against Texas Southern, UNT is one of 19 teams in the country with four different 20-point scorers this season.
• To put the versatility of UNT's scoring into perspective, the Mean Green had a 20-point performance 18 times in the 2023-24 season with only three of them not coming from Tommisha Lampkin or DesiRay Kernal.
THE MAGIC NUMBER IS 70
• While the UNT offense is averaging slightly under the 74.3 points per game from last season, reaching 70 points has still been an accurate indicator of the Mean Green's success.
• North Texas is 3-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points and 23-1 overall under Jason Burton when hitting the mark.
• The lone loss came of Feb. 4, 2024 when UNT fell at Tulsa, 79-74.
