Three North Texas players scored 20 or more points in the victory
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Alcorn State, 84-65, on a special season opening night inside The Super Pit.
Prior to the game, two banners were unveiled and lifted into the arena's rafters for the Mean Green's AAC regular season championship and WBIT appearance in the 2023-24 season.
Despite a 21-12 lead after the first quarter, the Mean Green let Alcorn State hang around before halftime by going on a scoring drought of over five minutes heading into the locker room. During that stretch, the Lady Braves put together an 8-0 run to cut UNT's lead to 28-24.
The Mean Green's defense helped them take control of the game in the third quarter outscoring Alcorn State 33-18 in the period. Kyla Deck gave North Texas the spark it needed offensively with 15 points in the quarter as UNT matched the third highest point total in a quarter in program history.
In her first game for the Mean Green, Deck tallied 27 points, with 24 of those coming in the second half where she went a near perfect 6-of-6 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. The SFA transfer was one of three players to score 20 or more points for North Texas, with Tommisha Lampkin registering 23 points and 11 rebounds in her first double double of the season, and Desiree Wooten adding a career-high 20 points.
"I don't know the last time I've been a part of a game where three players have scored 20 points," head coach Jason Burton said. "Those three combining for 70 points and the efficiency they did it with is special."
North Texas was able to stretch out its lead to a comfortable margin throughout the second half by shooting 68% and scoring 56 points over the final 20 minutes. The Mean Green's victory marks the fifth straight season starting 1-0 and improves UNT to 34-15 in home openers in program history.
"To come out in the first game and get a win is always nice," Burton said. "You're playing against a Division I opponent who you haven't seen yet this season, so you don't know what they're going to run or how they'll play. We came out and found a way to win, which is what you have to do sometimes early in the season."
North Texas will have a short turnaround with Texas Southern coming into Denton for a Thursday night matchup. The Mean Green and Tigers will tip off at 5:30 p.m. CT in the first game of a doubleheader in The Super Pit with the UNT men's team set to take on Wayland Baptist in the nightcap.
