Thursday will be the first meeting between the schools since 1998
DENTON, Texas – UNT women's basketball will renew its series with Texas Southern Thursday night inside The Super Pit nearly 26 years to the day since their last meeting in 1998.
The Mean Green women will tip off against Texas Southern at 5:30 p.m. CT in what is the first game of a doubleheader at The Super Pit. The UNT men's team will take on Wayland Baptist at approximately 7:30 p.m. CT in the nightcap.
Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets for the men's game against Wayland Baptist, which includes entry to both games of the doubleheader. Single game tickets can be found at MeanGreenTickets.com.
North Texas holds a tight lead in the series with the Tigers having won four of the seven contests, including the last three. Texas Southern won three of the first four meetings between the programs, including at The Super Pit in 1982.
UNT has been tough to beat at home during the Jason Burton era, especially in nonconference play. The Mean Green are 6-0 against nonconference opponents at The Super Pit since the start of the 2023-24 season, winning by an average of 29 points per game in those contests.
The Mean Green opened the 2024-25 season in line with that trend, defeating Alcorn State, 84-65, behind a dominant third quarter. North Texas outscored Alcorn 33-18 in the quarter, led by Kyla Deck who had 15 points of her own in the period.
Deck finished the night with a game-high 27 points in her UNT debut, while Tommisha Lampkin posted 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Desiree Wooten added another 20 points. It was the first time in program history, UNT has had three 20-point scorers in a single game.
Texas Southern is led by head coach Vernette Skeene who is in her third season leading the Tigers. TSU dropped their season opener on the road at SFA, 86-45.
Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Kyle Youmans and Austyn Iven on the call and can be heard on the Varsity Network with Zac Babb.
