DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team improved to 8-4 on the season with an 83-57 victory over Chicago State in its final nonconference game Saturday inside The Super Pit.
Sophomore Shadasia Brackens led North Texas with a career-high 17 points in the absence of Tommisha Lampkin. Desiree Wooten matched Brackens in the scoring column behind a trio of 3-pointers as the pair were the leading scorers in the game.
The AAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year, Lampkin missed her first game since Jan. 5, 2023 due to being placed in concussion protocol. It snapped a streak of 46 consecutive games in which she had started which also dates back to the 2022-23 season.
Jaelyn Talley got her second start of the season in place of Lampkin and delivered her first double double of the season, and fifth of her career. By halftime, Talley had already scored a season-high nine points and finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
"It's nice to go into the holidays with a win and to play the fourth quarter the way we did," head coach Jason Burton said. "We knew coming into this game without Tommisha Lampkin that people would have to step up and it would take a team victory. When you look at this game, it is a good thing for us to have multiple players have good games and develop some confidence heading into conference play."
After struggling to get started offensively in previous games, the Mean Green came out fast in the first quarter, shooting 50% and jumping out to a 22-13 lead over the Cougars. However, Chicago State continued to keep the game within reach shooting over 50% from the field in the second and third quarters.
After the North Texas lead got cut to 45-42 midway through the third quarter, the Mean Green shut the door by outscoring Chicago State 38-15 the rest of the way.
Ereauna Hardaway was the fourth North Texas player to score double figures on the day, finishing with 14 points. The junior guard also tallied a season-high six assists and a career-high seven rebounds on the day. Kyla Deck also contributed eight rebounds in the win.
UNT will open American Athletic Conference play on Dec. 29 when it takes on Wichita State.
