DENTON, Texas – UNT Track and Field is set to compete at the Wasburn Open in Topeka, Kansas Friday and Saturday as the Mean Green inch closer toward the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
North Texas will send a full squad to the event, with the exception of All-America thrower KeAyla Dove and mid-distance runner Sukeil Foucha. Both athletes will have the weekend off before getting into the second half of the indoor season.
Through three meets, Dove has claimed three victories, broke the program and conference record twice and been named the AAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week in consecutive weeks. Foucha has set the program record in the 800 meters and has the fastest 400 meters time for North Texas this season.
Without Dove and Foucha, a young group of Mean Green will have the chance to continue to impress as they have through the first month of the season. On the men's side, freshman sprinter Jaylen Washington will make his second appearance of the season after claiming gold in the 60 meters and the 200 meters at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational. For the women, freshmen Deja Shaw-Huckaby (60m, 200m), Aariyana Williams (400m) and Rayona Runnels (Long Jump) all have a top-10 mark in the AAC this season in their respective events.
"We're excited about heading to Kansas this week to get a lot of good competition at Washburn," head coach Doug Marshall said. "We have a young but talented group traveling this weekend with a few of our older athletes. I'm excited to see how the group continues to progress. It was a good week of our practice and our athletes look prepared and ready."
The Washburn Open will get underway on Friday morning with the men's heptathlon beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT. Men's weight throw will kick off the field events on Friday at 2 p.m. CT and the meet will conclude Saturday evening. Live results for the meet can be found here, while a live stream can be found on the MIAA Network.
