Roth Takes Crown at Nexus Collegiate
2/14/2024 1:59:00 PM | Women's Golf
NEW PROVIDENCE, The Bahamas - Senior Ellie Roth notched her first collegiate victory and led UNT to a fourth-place finish at the Nexus Collegiate at Albany Golf Club on Wednesday, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish the three-day event at 2-under and one shot clear of four golfers to win the event loaded with ranked teams.
Roth was 1-over on the front-nine on Wednesday before going 2-under on the back, including three birdies in her final five holes to claim the championship - the first for a UNT individual since Patricia Sinolungan tied for the championship at the Tulane Classic in 2022 and the first outright individual title for the Mean Green since Audrey Tan won back-to-back events at the Conference USA Championship and the Let Them Play Classic in 2021.
"It felt amazing to get the win today," Roth said. "This was something I've been working toward for a long time. I'm grateful for the incredible support from my teammates and coaches and am excited to keep up the momentum in Houston."
UNT, which entered the week ranked 46th in the latest SCOREBOARD Top 100, finished fourth in the event - one shot back of Iowa State and No. 37 Kentucky and four shots back champion No. 45 Tulsa. The Mean Green defeated three teams ranked ahead of them in the national poll: No. 28 Mississippi State, No. 29 Houston and No. 35 Michigan.
Senior Emilie Ricaud also had a solid week in The Bahamas, as she was in the top 10 throughout the event and finished tied for ninth at 3-over after a 1-over 73 on Wednesday.
"We are very excited for Ellie capturing her first college win," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "She has been in position before, so it is satisfying to see her get it done.
Emilie also played a solid event. This tournament was very winnable but we were not consistent top to bottom. We did pick up some nice wins against very good competition. We will get back to work and get our lineup set for Houston."
UNT will get back to action Feb. 26-27, at The Chevron Collegiate at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
