DENTON - After collecting her first collegiate victory last week in the Nexus Collegiate in The Bahamas, UNT senior Ellie Roth has earned the program's first Women's Golf Player of the Week honor since the program became a member of The American in July.
It's the second conference golfer of the week award for Roth, who earned her first last season as a member of Conference USA.
Roth won the event, which was hosted by Texas Tech and featured nine teams ranked in the top 60 nationally and several ranked individuals, at 2-under par as one of just five players to break par in the event. She shot a 72-71-71 to lead her team to a fourth-place showing and was the only player in the field to shoot par or better in all three rounds. Roth was clutch down the stretch throughout the event, as she carded three birdies in her final four holes in the second round and three birdies over her final five holes in the final round. Through five events this season, Roth leads the team with a 71.71 stroke average.
"I'm excited to see Ellie named golfer of the week for her win in The Bahamas," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "She has worked hard over the past few weeks getting her game back in shape from the break. This win should give her a lot of confidence heading into Houston and for the rest of the spring. Once you win, it takes away some pressure knowing that you can win."
The Mean Green have a quick turnaround and will begin play at The Chevron Collegiate on Monday at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
Fans can follow the program throughout the season on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and can check MeanGreenSports.com for tournament recaps and more.
