UNT set to take on FAU and USF both in Tampa this weekend
TAMPA, Fla. – Riding a four-match win streak early in the season, the UNT women's tennis team will hit the road for the first time in 2024 as they travel to Tampa, Florida, to take on American Athletic Conference opponents FAU and USF Saturday and Sunday.
The Mean Green are set to take on FAU Saturday at 11:00 AM CT followed by a matchup with host USF Sunday at 10:00 AM CT.
UNT comes into the weekend having won four straight matches, tied with FAU for the longest active win streak in the American, highlighted by Sunday's thrilling 4-3 win over Houston. The win for the Mean Green was the program's first over a Big 12 school since 2016.
Stadfany Nformi and Carolina Laydner have led the way so far this season for UNT, both posting perfect 4-0 records in singles play.
Nformi, who garnered AAC Player of the Week honors Tuesday for her performances, is perfect in both singles and doubles matchups this season. Her and Olivia Halvorsen have teamed up at line one doubles to post a clean 5-0 sheet.
Laydner, meanwhile, is also perfect in doubles play at line two win teaming up with Lilly Schultz as that duo has posted a 4-0 record.
In total, UNT has an impressive 11-1 mark overall in doubles play this season and has yet to lose the doubles point in match.
FAU comes into Saturday's matchup with a similar start to the 2024 season. Much like the Mean Green, the Owls dropped their opening contest of the year against Northwestern and has since ripped of four straight victories going into the weekend.
The Owls have been led this season by freshman Panna Bartha who has a perfect 5-0 singles record this season, all at line one.
USF has won back-to-back matches after starting the year 1-2 against stiff competition. The Bulls have been tough at home thus far with all three of their wins coming in Tampa.
Grace Schumacher leads the Bulls at line one singles with a 3-1 record this season as she has helped USF post a 16-9 overall mark in singles play on the year.
Sunday's matchup with the Bulls will be streamed live on ESPN+.
