Mean Green grab singles wins at lines four and five
PALM SPRINGS, CA. – Playing against its fourth ranked opponent in its last six matches, the UNT tennis team fell 4-2 against No. 69 Liberty Saturday at the Monterey Country Club.
After dropping the doubles point, North Texas picked up wins from Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard playing at lines four and five, respectively, but ultimately dropped the match to fall to 8-7 on the season.
In doubles play to start the day, Liberty was able to grab victories at lines two and three. Playing at line one, Olivia Malm and Stanislava Shulzhenko were ahead 5-4 in their match before it was halted.
Schultz got the Mean Green on the board first with a win in straight sets at line five. The freshman from Bad Soden, Germany, was strong in a 6-4, 6-1 win to make the score 3-1 in favor of the flames.
Moments later, Chalard cut the deficit down to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory playing at line four. With the win, Chalard has matched a team-high in wins with seven, improving to 7-4 on the year with wins at lines two, three and four this season.
Needing to pick up wins at lines one and two, both Malm and Stadfany Nformi played a decisive third set in their respective matches.
UNT was unable to pick up a win, however, falling at line two 6-1, 0-6, 3-6 to ultimately drop the match.
The Mean Green will continue their Spring Break trip in California Tuesday with a matchup against Wichita State at 3:00 PM CT.
