DALLAS — UNT men's basketball sophomore guard Jason Edwards was voted first team all-conference by the American Athletic Conference on Tuesday.
This is the fifth straight season North Texas has had a player named to an all-conference first team. Edwards is the youngest Mean Green player to earn first team all-conference honors since Tony Mitchell in 2011-12. Mitchell was a freshman.
The 6-foot-0 North Texas newcomer has been an explosive scorer for the Mean Green in his first season in Denton. He concluded the regular season averaging 19.1 points per game over the 30 regular season games while shooting an efficient 43.2 percent from the floor.
After coming off the bench during non-conference, Edwards was moved into the starting lineup due to injuries and his scoring took off from there. In the final 18 games of the year, the Atlanta native averaged nearly 22 points per game and shot over 37 percent from deep.
Edwards has scored over 30 points in five different games — all against league opponents — which ties the program record for most 30-point games in a single season. He scored 390 points against conference opponents, which is the second-most in UNT history and he enters the 2024 AAC Championship having scored 573 points total.
Edwards has scored over 20 points 12 different times this season and has scored in double figures in 23 straight games headed into the conference tournament.
The sophomore is a prolific shooter as he's made so far 77 3-pointers on the season at over a 36 percent clip. His 77 made 3-point field goals is tied for the eighth most in a single season in program history. In two different games this season, Edwards began the contest making at least his first seven 3-point field goal attempts.
Despite being just six-feet tall, Edwards is not just shooter. He's actually made a significant more number of two-point field goals (111) than 3-point field goals (77).
Edwards joined North Texas this summer after one season at Dodge City Community College where he was a first team NJCAA All-American as he was the nation's second leading scorer (765) and led Dodge City to 25 wins and a trip to the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
UNT opens the 2024 American Championship Thursday at 6 p.m. CT against Tulane from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. The Mean Green swept the Green Wave during the regular season. Tickets to the tournament can be purchased here.
