FORT WORTH — The UNT men's basketball team opens the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship Thursday late afternoon versus Tulane from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
The AAC Championship second round matchup is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPNU and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.
Tickets to the 14-team single-elimination conference tournament can be purchased here.
After first-year head coach Ross Hodge led North Texas to an 10-8 league record, the most conference wins by a first year Mean Green head coach, the team heads into the tournament with a No. 7 seeding and a first-round bye. They're facing in their opening game a No. 10 seeded Green Wave squad that is led by a veteran head coach and features an extremely experienced roster that during the summer was projected to be one of the top teams in the league this season.
Thursday will be the third meeting between North Texas and Tulane this season. The Mean Green swept the Green Wave during the regular season with a win in Denton and a win in New Orleans.
This will be the second time UNT and Tulane have met in a conference tournament. The two schools faced each other in the 2014 Conference USA Tournament. Coincidentally, the 2014 matchup was also a second-round matchup and was a 7-seed vs. 10-seed game with the seedings flipped as Tulane was the No. 7 seed and North Texas was the No. 10 seed. The Green Wave won the 2014 game, 66-61.
Though this is North Texas' first season in the American, Thursday will not be its first time playing a neutral site game in Dickies Arena. On Dec. 11, 2021, the Mean Green beat UMass 66-57 in a non-conference game played at Dickies Arena. Current North Texas senior Rubin Jones and junior Aaron Scott are the only active Mean Green players who played in the 2021 game. Jones, then a sophomore, scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the win. Scott, a freshman, came off the bench and scored four points to go along with five rebounds and a pair of assists.
The winner of Thursday's game will face the No. 2 seed Florida Atlantic Owls in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
