DENTON, Texas – The UNT track and field team will host the 2024 Bill Schmidt Classic Friday and Saturday at the Soccer and Track & Field Stadium to kick off the outdoor season.
Previously known as the North Texas Classic, the name of the meet was changed prior to this season to honor a UNT legend. A walk-on to the track program in 1966, Schmidt became a two-time Missouri Valley Conference in the javelin throw, placing second in the event at the NCAA Championships in 1970. He is the first North Texas to win an Olympic medal after taking bronze in the javelin at the 1972 games. This season
The two-day meet will consist of a collegiate division, which will include 12 colleges in addition to UNT, and a high school division.
UNT is coming off its first indoor season in the American Athletic Conference that saw the men place eighth and women take ninth at the conference meet. KeAyla Dove qualified for her third consecutive NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships where she earned second-team All-America honors with an 11th place finish.
The Mean Green will have an abundance of athletes competing at the Bill Schmidt Classic, although they will be without Dove this meet. A pair of proven javelin throwers will make their season debuts at the meet. Zion Hill is a three-time Conference USA champion and holds the top five marks in program history, while Vitus Hansgaard has earned all-conference honors twice in his career.
Field events on Friday will begin with the collegiate women's hammer throw at 10:30 a.m., while the running events will begin at 2 p.m. and have a rolling schedule for Friday's races. Competition will resume on Saturday morning with field events before the finals of the running events begin with the 4x100 meter relay at 2 p.m. CT.
