The Bruzzy
Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club | Ardmore, Okla.
The UNT women's golf team will head north of the Red River to host the sixth edition of The Bruzzy, at the home course of the tournament's namesake and program supporter Jerome "Bruzzy" Westheimer. The Mean Green won the event for the first time last year - the first year played at Dornick Hills.
THE EVENT: Dornick Hills will play as a par-70 course at 6,071 yards. The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and will play the final 18 holes during Sunday's final round. Each day will feature a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 13 teams participating in the tournament, including seven teams ranked in the top 60 and three in the top 50: No. 8 Arkansas, Charlotte, FIU, Kent State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, No. 28 Purdue, Texas Tech, Tulsa, No. 44 UNT, UTSA, Wisconsin.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Shreya Pal, Bouquet Subsomboon, Mason Lewis, Ellie Roth and Emilie Ricaud. Four players will compete as individuals: Kat Anglett, Chandler Browning, Mallorie Luitwieler and Sakura Sugiyama.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
AKERS SAYS: "We are very excited to host The Bruzzy at Dornick Hills this year," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "The course is very special as it is Perry Maxwell's first design. It is also home to our very generous donor, Bruzzy Westheimer. The course has very difficult greens and requires many rounds of practice. We have traveled up to Ardmore multiple times this spring, and I hope the results match last year. I like the fact our entire team gets to play this week. We have a very good team and this gives everyone a chance to compete. I am hoping to see more consistency from top to bottom this week."
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over eight years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for three straight NCAA Regionals on the heels of three straight conference championships.
UP NEXT:Â The Mean Green will head back to Oklahoma on April 8-9 for a Match Play event at OU's Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, which will serve as a final tuneup before the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 15-17, in Brooksville, Florida.Â
Â
STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
