UNT drops road matchup against the Owls
HOUSTON – Returning to action for the first time in 10 days, the UNT tennis team got singles wins from Stadfany Nformi and Carolina Laydner but could not pick up the team victory as they fell 4-2 Friday against Rice at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The loss drops North Texas to 9-9 overall on the season. In those nine losses, including Friday's matchup, UNT has secured at least two points in five.
Rice started things off by winning the doubles point with a pair of narrow victories. The Owls won 6-4 at line one and 7-5 at line three as UNT dropped its record this season in doubles points to 11-6.
In singles play, Stadfany Nformi picked up the first win of the day for the Mean Green playing at line three. The sophomore from Douala, Cameroon, picked up her eighth singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Moments later, Carolina Laydner made the team score 2-1 in favor of UNT with a strong win in straight sets at line six. Laydner, who was returning to action for the first time since March 2, won 6-0, 6-2 to improve her team-best record to 8-2 this season.
Rice bounced back in a big way, however, winning in straight sets at lines one and five to re-take the lead 3-2.
Needing to win both of the remaining singles contests to win the match, both Stanislava Shulzhenko and Lou Chalard were able to force a third set in their respective matches after dropping the opening set.
Unfortunately, however, Rice's Darya Schwartzman clinched the match for the Owls with a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory at line two to push the final score to 4-2.
The Mean Green will be back in action Saturday when they take on No. 42 Charlotte in Houston at 11:00 AM. Live stats and video will be available on MeanGreenSports.com
