The 2023-24 season marked Jennings’ fourth season with North Texas
DENTON, Texas – UNT women's basketball head coach Jason Burton announced the promotion of Durmon Jennings to Associate Coach on Monday.
Jennings, who was retained on staff by Burton prior to the 2023-24 season, recently concluded his fourth season with North Texas and was elevated from the assistant coach role he has held since arriving in Denton in 2020.
"Durmon Jennings has been an instrumental part of the UNT program over the last four years," Burton said. "He has been a huge part of building our culture and his fingerprints are on every aspect of our program. He is one of the rising young coaches in our profession and is well deserving of this promotion."
The Mean Green have won 10+ conference games in three of Jennings' four seasons on staff, including a program record 13 during the 2023-24 campaign that saw UNT earn a share of the AAC regular season title.
Working primarily with the post players, Jennings has been a key figure in Tommisha Lampkin's growth into an all-conference performer. He's helped the senior center improve her numbers each season to put together one of the best careers in UNT women's basketball history. In total, Jennings has guided three post players to all-conference honors while at North Texas, including Lampkin and DesiRay Kernal who were First Team All-AAC selections in 2024, and Madison Townley in 2022.
Jennings also plays a critical role in recruiting, game planning and scouting opponents for the Mean Green. His abundant energy and work ethic he brings to the program on a daily basis was vital to a culture shift that contributed in the third-biggest turnaround in Division I this year and the winningest season in UNT women's basketball history.
"Receiving this promotion and change of title is a blessing," Jennings said. "A lot of the credit goes to the players I've gotten to work with every day who teach me something and help me build confidence in myself. This is just the next step and a part of the process in trying to reach my overall goal of being a head coach someday. I'm extremely honored to be the associate coach under Jason Burton. He's taught me so much in one year of working for him and I know the future is bright for me as I continue to grow under his leadership."
Jennings came to Denton after spending five seasons holding multiple positions at Eastern New Mexico University. Prior to entering the collegiate ranks, Jennings served multiple stints at the high school level coaching both boys and girls basketball in Las Vegas and his hometown of Indianapolis. Jennings also served as a 17U coach for the Elite Youth Basketball League in the summer of 2015 and as a 15U coach for the Under Armor Association during the summer of 2014.
He earned his bachelor's degree in Sports Management at the University of Indianapolis in 2013 after he transferred from Geneva College where he played on the men's basketball team during the 2007-08 season. Jennings earned his master's degree in Sports Administration from Eastern New Mexico University in 2016.
