Both athletes placed fourth in their event marking the highest finishes for UNT
WACO, Texas – The UNT track and field team posted a slew of personal bests despite wet conditions at the Michael Johnson Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The majority of the meet was completed despite consistent rain throughout the day Saturday. Competition was paused around 4:30 p.m. CT Saturday for a weather delay and canceled shortly after with just two events remaining.
With the postseason looming a few of the veterans received a weekend off for rest, giving a young squad the opportunity to compete against a solid field of teams, including Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor.
"It was good to get out and compete this weekend at Baylor," head coach Doug Marshall said."A lot of younger athletes got a chance to go up against some of the top talent in the NCAA. I thought we had some good things happen but we need to find ways to be more consistent. I'm looking forward to putting some things together for our final regular season meet."
Allison Stigarll and Miranda Vreeland recorded fourth place finishes in their events to lead North Texas. Stigarll collected her third placement inside the top five in the hammer throw this season with a throw of 55.98 meters, while Vreeland had a career-best time of 11:19.41 in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
The distance crew saw seven runners set personal bests on Friday evening in the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. In the 1,500 meters, Tiblets Abreha and Shannon Cook placed 24th and 31st with personal bests, while freshmen Connor Bartek and Adrian Gray clocked the fastest times of their careers on the men's side. Shortly after, Trinity Trotter placed 12th in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 8:09.02 and Aidan Carter and Jake Johnson tallied personal best times for the men.
Kendahl Tucker also toppled her career-best time in the 400 meters with an impressive seventh-place finish Saturday. Her time of 54.70 narrowly bested her previous time of 54.94 from the 2023 season. Chase Lehr also placed seventh in the men's 800 meters followed by Luke Canon in 10th place.
Prior to Saturday's action being delayed true freshman Phil Cotton scored a personal best 39.07 meters in the javelin throw. Cotton has competed in nine different events this outdoor season and has become the fourth member of the UNT men's javelin group that is ranked No. 16 in the country by the USTFCCCA.
North Texas will be back in action next Saturday at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout in Lubbock, Texas to round out the regular season.
