Mean Green will now turn their attention to AAC Outdoor Championships May 10-12 in San Antonio
LUBBOCK, Texas – Allison Stigarll won the women's hammer throw competition and Dionna James won the women's shot put to lead the UNT track and field team at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout in Lubbock, Texas, in its final regular season meet of the year.
Stigarll traded the lead back and forth with Northwestern State's Bernesha Knowles who held the lead after five rounds of throws. Yet, Stigarll would top Knowles' mark of 53.40 meters with a toss of 54.03 meters in her final attempt to claim the hammer throw title and her third individual win of the season.
James took first place in the B Section of the women's shot put competition with a mark of 14.70 meters. While her first attempt of 14.66 meters would have won the event, James topped it with her second-best throw of the season, trailing only a personal best throw of 14.74 meters from last weekend at the Michael Johnson Invitational.
In addition to the two throwers, the Mean Green saw plenty of positive performances at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout in what was the final tune-up before the AAC Outdoor Championships coming up May 10-12.
"I'm definitely happy with how we finished the regular season," head coach Doug Marshall said. "We had a few regular season and lifetime PR's before we head into the conference meet. Across the board it was the meet we needed heading into championship season."
Senior Macy Burnham and freshman Indyia Walton both posted personal bests in two events Friday. Burnham narrowly clipped her previous personal best in the 400 meters with a time of 55.49 that was good for 14th place, while also running the fastest time of her career in the 200 meters at 24.80 seconds. Meanwhile, Walton recorded a wind-legal personal best 13.97 in the 100-meter hurdles and a career best 1:03.07 in the 400-meter hurdles, placing 11th in both events.
Walton was the second-highest placer among the Mean Green hurdlers in each event. Nakiya Marshall placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles crossing the line in 13.97, while Akerah Jones also posted a personal best in the event. China Okoye was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.28 as she looked prime to compete for a conference title.
The North Texas men were led by javelin thrower Akeel Hanchard who placed third in the event. His mark of 61.18 meters on his final attempt is his best throw of the season and keeps him inside the top-five in the AAC where he is joined by teammates Zion Hill and Vitus Hansgaard. Freshman Phil Cotton also posted personal bests in the javelin and shot put in Lubbock.
North Texas will have a weekend off before heading to San Antonio to compete at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by UTSA at the Park West Athletic Complex May 10-12.
