DENTON, Texas – The UNT track and field team heads to San Antonio to compete in the 2024 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships that begin Friday, May 10 at UTSA's Park West Athletic Complex.
The young Mean Green team has been building confidence throughout the spring in preparation for the final full team meet of the season. In its most recent outing at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout at Texas Tech on April 26-27, North Texas had two individual champions in throwers Dionna James and Allison Stigarll.
Stigarll has been a consistent performer for the Mean Green during the outdoor season. After taking third place in the weight throw at the AAC Indoor Championships, she continued her success in the hammer throw. She is now the second-best performer in the women's hammer throw in program history after going four consecutive weeks of setting a personal best mark. Her top mark of the season at 57.19 meters is the third-best throw in school history and ranks third in the conference heading into this weekend's meet.
The Mean Green will also expect to capture points in the women's 400-meter hurdles from China Okoye. The conference leader in the event with a personal-best time of 58.56, Okoye's mark from the Pacific Coast Invitational is the fourth-best mark in school history.
The only other North Texas athlete who leads the conference is javelin thrower Zion Hill. Already a three-time conference champion, Hill will look to capture his fourth individual title and first in the AAC on Friday. He leads the men's javelin group that is ranked No. 15 in the nation by USTFCCCA. Fellow throwers Vitus Hansgaard and Akeel Hanchard round out the top five marks in the conference and will look to join Hill on the podium.
Hill, Stigarll and Okoye will all be featured on the first day of competition for the Mean Green. The hammer throw and javelin throw trials and finals will be contested on Friday, while the 400-meter hurdles trials will cap off the track events for the day.
Saturday will consist of more field events finals and the remainder of the trials in the individual track events. Sukeil Foucha will look to defend his AAC title in the 800 meters beginning in the qualifying round on Saturday. Foucha has only competed twice in the 800 meters during the outdoor season after claiming gold in the event at the indoor championships. His best time of 1:15.66 this season ranks seventh in the conference heading into the weekend and behind teammate Luke Canon who sits in third with his personal-best time of 1:50.46 at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The 2024 AAC Outdoor Championships will conclude Sunday with the remainder of the field events and the finals races on the track. The 4x100-meter relay is set to kick things off on the track at 4:30 p.m. with the men's 4x400 relay being the last event scheduled to run at approximately 7:45 p.m. CT.
Each of the three days of competition will be streamed on ESPN+ and live results for the meet can be found here.
