DENTON - The UNT women's golf team learned their NCAA Regional fate on Wednesday afternoon during the selection show on Golf Channel, and the Mean Green will be heading to Bermuda Run, North Carolina, as part of the Bermuda Run Regional, marking the fourth consecutive year the program has earned an NCAA Regional bid. UNT enters the event as the ninth seed.
After three straight championships in Conference USA from 2021-23, UNT was an automatic qualifier, but this year was different, as the Mean Green had to wait for an at-large bid after coming up short at the conference championship in their first year in The American. UNT is the only AAC program with an active streak of four consecutive NCAA Regional bids and one of seven non-P5 programs nationally to have a streak of at least four consecutive NCAA Regional berths.
"I feel a huge sense of relief and accomplishment to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament," said UNT head coach Michael Akers, who will be making his 10th appearance at a Regional as a head coach. "We had a great year overall and beat some very good teams. It was special seeing four of our players named to the All-Conference team today, too. We don't have a No. 1Â player but we have multiple great players. We just need to get four of them playing well each round at Regionals, and we could certainly advance."
The Mean Green, ranked No. 51 in the latest Clippd Scoreboard national poll, will be joined by top-seed and nationally-ranked No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 10 Texas, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 22 Mississippi State, No. 27 UCF, No. 34 South Florida, No. 39 Tennessee, No. 45 Oregon State, Delaware, Charleston Southern and Navy. UNT beat 4-seed Mississippi State at the Nexus Collegiate in The Bahamas in February.
The top five teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, on May 17-22. Also, the top individual from non-advancing teams at each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship as individuals.
This marks the fifth time in program history the Mean Green have made it to an NCAA Regional and fourth in as many years. Last year, the Mean Green earned their third straight automatic bid and competed in the Raleigh Regional as a 6-seed, which was the highest seed in program history. In 2022, they competed in the Albuquerque Regional a year after being selected to the Baton Rouge Regional, which was infamously canceled due to what was deemed unplayable conditions after rain hit the area. That led to the top six seeds automatically moving on to the NCAA Championship.
Akers said he from what he knows about the course, Bermuda Run East, the team has plenty at its disposal to prepare.
"It has Bermuda grass greens that are anticipated to run 11 to 12," said Akers, in regards to the speed of the greens. "Our greens keeper at Bruzzy's has our greens at an 11.5 right now, so we have a great place to practice and prepare."
