Jason Burton Named Coach of the Year in Texas
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team continued to see accolades roll in following its most successful season in program history with Dave Campbell's Texas Basketball recognizing head coach Jason Burton and three student-athletes Tuesday in its All-Texas awards.
Burton was named Coach of the Year by the outlet over Texas' Vic Schaefer, TCU's Mark Campbell and Lamar's Aqua Franklin. It's the second Coach of the Year honor for Burton this season after earning the distinction in the American Athletic Conference.
DesiRay Kernal was tabbed as the All-Texas Fifth-Year Player of the Year in addition to landing on the All-Texas First Team. The graduate student had one of the best seasons in recent memory at North Texas averaging 16.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting over 50% from the field.
Other members of the All-Texas First Team include Big 12 Player of the Year Madison Booker (Texas), Madison Conner (TCU), Sarah Andrews (Baylor) and Akasha Davis (Lamar).
Senior center and First Team All-AAC selection Tommisha Lampkin was recognized on the All-Texas Third Team. Lampkin, who recently announced she will return to UNT for her final season of eligibility in the 2024-25 season, led the Mean Green with 13 double doubles on the season.
Dyani Robinson earned her second Sixth Player of the Year honor after winning the award in the AAC as well. The point guard was third on the team in scoring behind Kernal and Lampkin. She averaged 12.9 points per game coming off the bench in the 2024 calendar year after making four starts in the first half of the season.
North Texas was tied for second with five honorees among Division I programs in the state, trailing only the University of Texas that received six honors. Lamar University tied the Mean Green with five selections. It's the most honors in a single season for the Mean Green, who had six total since the first year of the awards in 2020. Quincy Noble was a four-time honoree, while Anisha George and Aly Gamez were both recognized as All-Texas Honorable Mentions.
