DENTON — The UNT soccer team lost 2-1 Saturday night to No. 20 Alabama at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
North Texas (0-2) conceded the eventual match-winning goal to the nationally ranked Crimson Tide (1-1) in the 80th minute and it came just a minute after the Mean Green's Summer Brown tide the match with her first goal of the year.
"We played the No. 20 ranked team in the nation toe-to-toe and a tie would have been a fair result especially with the shots being even at 13 a piece," said head coach John Hedlund. "These games are good for us especially for the underclassmen who I was able to play at least a dozen in tonight's game."
UNT matched the Crimson Tide in total shots 13-13. However, they put five more on target than their opponent Saturday.
The Mean Green limited Alabama to just two shots on goal over the 90 minutes but it was those two shots that were the difference.
Brown's goal is the 10th of her career. The junior scored the then match-tying goal off a free kick from goalkeeper Maddie Ogden. Fellow forward Bailey Wesco headed the set piece to Brown who finished the play.
The match-winning goal was scored by Alabama's all-conference and 2024 Mac Hermann Award Watch List honoree Gianna Paul who had been kept in check leading up to the winner. Paul's goal was her only shot over the 78 minutes she played.
"Not the result we wanted for sure but I felt we played really well today," said senior Devyn Flannery. "Credit to Alabama. They're a really good, athletic and physical team. They could have easily packed in after we tied it but they came out firing. It's why they're nationally ranked. We'll learn from this and get better."
UNT has a bit of a break before they're back in action. Next, they host Texas Southern on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
