DENTON — The UNT soccer team shutout Texas Southern 2-0 Thursday night at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium for its first win of the year and head coach John Hedlund's 394th of his career.
The Mean Green (1-2) got goals in the win from senior Rachel Roebuck in the 58th minute and freshman Claire Niedermeier scored her first career goal in the 73rd minute. Alexis Miller who earned her first career start assisted on the Roebuck goal and Summer Brown assisted on the Niedermeier goal.
"I'm happy with the win but the finishing has to get much better," Hedlund said. "When you outshoot a team 38-0 and only score two goals then our finishing unfortunately is our weakness at this time and it has to improve especially before conference hits.
"Congrats to Rachel and Claire on scoring on great opportunities and getting the goals we needed. We will rest up and get ready for another home game on Sunday," he added.
North Texas outshot the Lady Tigers (1-2) 38-0 over 90-minute match. Thirteen of UNT's shots were on target. It's the first time since 2022 the Mean Green have had 30 or more shots in a single match.
Next up for UNT is another home match as they host Prairie View A&M at noon on Sunday at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
