Roebuck Scores Four To Lead Mean Green To 9-0 Win
8/25/2024 3:48:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Prior to first kick on Sunday, Roebuck, a third-year captain, was moved from the defense to up top at center forward by head coach John Hedlund to try and generate more goals.
It was the first time in Roebuck's collegiate career she played forward in a match.
"I'm extremely honored John (Hedlund) trusted me to play up there," Roebuck said. "We've had some slow starts so I tried to bring some energy quick into the game (Sunday) so I just took a shot and it went in and kept going in from there."
During UNT's previous match last Thursday against Texas Southern, Roebuck was encouraged in the second half to play further up the field to help the team score after being shutout in the first half.
The Mean Green scored two second half goals versus Texas Southern and won 2-0. Roebuck scored the first of the two goals.
On Sunday, she played 46 minutes and took a career high nine shots, putting six on target. The Royse City native entered the match having scored just three career goals over her three-year career, including the one she scored against Texas Southern on Thursday. Now Roebuck has scored five goals in the last two matches and became just the ninth player in program history to have a four-goal performance in a single match and the first since 2019.
"It was a good team win and our offense generated a lot of goals today and our defense worked hard to get us the shutout," Hedlund said. "We started seven underclassmen today so the future is very bright with all the young talent we have throughout our roster."
Three UNT players scored their first career goals on Sunday against the Lady Panthers (1-2). Freshman Hannah Phillips put the Mean Green (2-2) up 3-0 in the 17th minute with a shot from well outside the 18-yard box. Fellow freshman Rydlii Rives scored in the 34th minute to put UNT up 4-0 and senior Jacqueline Barnes scored the final goal of the match in 82nd minute as she fired in a free kick from just outside the box.
Also scoring on Sunday were seniors Bailey Wesco and Devyn Flannery who each scored their first goals of the 2024 season. Freshman goalkeeper Hicks Bishop was inserted in the second half for her first career appearance. Sophomore Alexis Miller had her first career multi-assist match of her career and junior Katherine Williams and freshman Ella Bushko each recorded their first career assists in the nine-goal win.
The nine-goal win over Prairie View A&M is tied for the sixth largest margin of victory in program history. It is the 10th time in program history North Texas has scored nine or more goals in a single match but the first time since 2013.
Next up for North Texas is its first road match as they will travel to Texas A&M Commerce on Friday for a 7 p.m. CT first kick. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
