
Volleyball Suffers Loss to RV Miami

Van Veen named to all-tournament team
DENTON, Texas – Mean Green volleyball ended the UNT Invitational with a 3-0 loss to RV Miami (FL) at The Super Pit on Sunday.
UNT (0-3) treated a record-breaking home crowd of 1,414 to a relentless effort (22-25, 20-25, 24-26) against the Hurricanes (3-0) that began in the opening set.
Down 18-12, the Mean Green charged back with a 9-5 run, including two kills and a block from senior Coco Gillett, that cut the lead to 23-21. In total, Gillett led the team with six kills in the first and 13 in the match.
Set two provided more peskiness from UNT with 10 tied scores and four lead changes in the frame. Payton Van Veen provided four kills on four attacks in the second and finished as the lone representative for UNT on the all-tournament team.
Van Veen, a former NCAA Division II All-American, recorded 27 kills on 58 attacks for a team high .397 hitting percentage over three matches.
The Mean Green opened the third set with multiple leads including two of five points but were unable to hold the edge. After falling to set point at 24-22, UNT fought back to level the frame at 24-24 with back-to-back kills from Van Veen before conceding a pair of points to end the match.
Freshman Ryann Vik made her collegiate debut and recorded one kill, one block and one dig over two sets played.
Setter Kamryn Scroggins extended her streak of double-digit assists to 51 matches, 36 at UNT, after she recorded 18 on Sunday.
