Women's Golf Releases 24-25 Schedule

DENTON - The UNT women's golf team schedule will feature several marquee events, including four in the state of Texas and a trip to Puerto Rico, as the Mean Green prepare for Year 2 at the American Athletic Conference Championship and look to qualify for the NCAA Regional for the fifth straight year before hopefully playing in the NCAA finals for the first time in program history.
The Mean Green will open the season on Sept. 9-10 at the Powercat Classic in Manhattan, Kansas, before a return trip the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma, on Sept. 21-23, which always features a loaded field full of Big 12 (and now SEC) teams.
UNT then heads to famed Medinah Country Club for the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah, hosted by Illinois, before closing the fall slate at Texas State in the Jim West Challenge for the second of two October events.
After a one-day match against Houston in January, UNT opens the spring tournament slate with a trip to the Puerto Rico Classic to open February before a return trip to The Chevron Collegiate at the Golf Club of Houston closes out the month. UNT has its final tuneup for the conference championship at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin, a month before the team heads back to Brooksville, Florida, for the AAC Championship at Southern Hills.
Head coach Michael Akers said one new reason the schedule is important is because of the newly adopted .500 rule for women's Division I golf - a rule that has been in men's Division I golf for nearly 20 years now. The rule requires a team to finish the regular season with a .500 or better winning percentage head-to-head against other Division I opponents to be eligible for regionals.
"I am excited and proud to build another incredible tournament schedule for our team," head coach Michael Akers said. "This will be the first year that NCAA DI women's golf will incorporate the .500 rule. This will be an interesting twist and will certainly have an impact."
"We face very good competition again, and we have the opportunity to earn another at-large bid to the NCAAs. I do want to win conference this year. This is a goal we are talking about. We now know the course and know what to expect."
