Tennis Starts Fall Season Strong in Opening Weekend

Mean Green dominate at Diving Eagle, Pielet wins opening round at ITA All-American
DENTON – The UNT tennis team kicked off its fall season in a big way over the weekend, showing dominance in both singles and doubles in the Diving Eagle Invite at Waranch Tennis Complex.
In addition, Gianna Pielet started her UNT career strong in the ITA All-American Championships, winning her first-round matchup to become the first Mean Green player to win a match in the event since Maria Kononova in 2018.
At the Diving Eagle Invite, North Texas went undefeated against other teams in doubles competition, posting a 10-2 overall record with the lone two losses coming in matches that featured two UNT pairs.
"We were really eager to open play this weekend and came out ready to play each day," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We were dominant in the doubles, sweeping the top three spots. We've been working hard this fall adding things to our games in both doubles and singles and we were able to execute that under pressure. I'm impressed with our fitness and endurance over the weekend. I felt like our level was sustained from first shot on Friday to the last shot Sunday. All the Mean Green players competing here at home and Gianna at All-Americans fought hard, and I was proud of how we battled for UNT. This was just the first step of the season and I'm excited about the direction this team is headed."
Pielet opened up play at the ITA event in thrilling fashion, winning a tiebreaker in the third set to take down Elisa Rigazio of Drexel 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2). Her time was cut short, however, as she fell in the round of 64 against Valeria Ray of Vanderbilt 6-1, 6-2.
In Denton, Stadfany Nformi and Lilly Schultz teamed up to win the title in the main draw doubles bracket, posting a perfect 4-0 record with three separate 6-2 victories, including a win in the title match.
In addition, the combinations of Stanislava Shulzhenko and Carolina Laydner and Marina Adati and Lou Chalard both produced 3-1 records with their lone loss coming against Nformi and Schultz.
To put the doubles dominance into perspective, UNT had three of the final four teams in the doubles main draw.
In singles play, the Mean Green posted an impressive 18-6 overall record, led by perfect 4-0 marks from both Shulzhenko and Adati.
In addition, Chalard and Laydner both finished 3-1 while Nformi and Schultz posted 2-2 records.
