SAN ANTONIO — Summer Brown and Bailey Wesco came off the bench and each scored a late first half goal to lead the UNT soccer team to a 2-0 win at Incarnate Word Friday night and extend the Mean Green's unbeaten streak to five in a row.
North Texas (4-2-1) outshout the Cardinals (1-3-2) 31-3 on Friday. It's the fifth straight match where the Mean Green have attempted 27 or more shots. They entered the road match averaging the fourth most shots per game in the country (27.7). During this five-match stretch, UNT is on average outshooting its opponents 35.6 to 4.2.
The shutout is UNT's fourth this season. They had seven total last year.
"It's never easy winning on the road especially on artificial turf but Bailey (Wesco), Summer (Brown) and Devyn (Flannery) gave us the energy and the goals tonight," said head coach John Hedlund who picked up his 397th career win on Friday. "Our defense led by Abi (Major) and Maddie (Ogden) got us the shutout. A solid team road win tonight."
Brown and Wesco both came off the bench in the 29th minute in what was then a 0-0 game.
As the first half clock ticked down in the 41st minute, junior Katherine Williams intercepted a UIW pass near midfield and immediately pushed it forward to Brown who got past the Cardinals' backline and then beat their keeper 1-v-1 for the match's opening goal. It is her third goal of the season and 13th of her career, which ties her with Devyn Flannery for the most by an active UNT player.
A few minutes after Brown's goal as just seconds remained on the first-half clock, the Mean Green were fouled 20 yards away from the UIW goal. As North Texas set up for the free kick, midfielder Mia Bernard tapped the set piece to Wesco who ran up and smashed the ball over the Cardinals' wall and past their keeper into the net. It's her second goal of the season and 11th of her career.
The two first half goals were all North Texas needed as Incarnate Word only put one shot on target in the final 45 minutes and didn't have many dangerous scoring opportunities.
Next up for UNT is its conference opener as they host Florida Atlantic on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT. North Texas fans can pick up Mean Green supporter scarfs at the match as a free giveaway. Thursday's match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
