
Volleyball Falls to Georgetown

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – UNT volleyball lost its opening match of the Maryland Tournament 3-1 against Georgetown on Friday at XFINITY Center Pavilion.
The Mean Green (1-4) matched its most efficient hitting performance of the season with a .271 hitting percentage versus the Hoyas (2-2) and have outhit its opponents in four of its five matches this season.
UNT opened the four-set match (24-26, 19-25, 25-18, 19-25) with a six-point lead by the midway mark of the first set but saw the lead slip away as Georgetown stole the frame after closing on a 7-2 run.
Aryn Johnson collected a season-high mark of 22 kills, including eight in the opening set. Friday marked Johnson's third 20-plus kill performance of her career and first by a UNT player since she set her career high at LA Tech on Oct. 23, 2022.
Down 19-9 in the second frame, the Mean Green were led on a relentless 8-2 run led by Payton Van Veen. During the comeback, Van Veen recorded four kills and combined with Truli Levy for a block. Ultimately, the run fell short and UNT dropped set two.
Van Veen finished with 10 kills, four blocks, four digs and one ace for the afternoon. She ranks third on the team with 52 kills and 62.0 points for the season.
The Mean Green dominated the third set after it extended a 10-point lead on the Hoyas at 22-12 and staved off a late charge to keep the comeback alive. Georgetown held on in the fourth set despite a late 5-1 run from UNT led by freshman Regan Bedell.
Bedell set new career-high marks with five kills and 20 attacks along with two digs, one block and one assist.
Setter Kamryn Scroggins recorded a career high 20 digs along with 21 assists for the first 20-20 double-double for UNT since Rhett Robinson (2018-21) posted 28 kills and 20 digs at UT Arlington on Sept. 4, 2021.
