The Mean Green blocked a season-high 11 shots in the win
DENTON, Texas — The UNT women's basketball team's played stellar defense en route to 61-53 victory over Rice Wednesday night inside The Super Pit.
"We played a really good game today," head coach Jason Burton said. "It definitely wasn't the first half we wanted, but it was the second half we wanted. We are consistently playing defense at the level that we need to play at. I thought our players did a great job flying all over to force tough shots and force turnovers. We did a great job of coming out and getting stops."
The Mean Green held the Owls to their second lowest scoring output of the season, while tallying 11 blocks and forcing 22 turnovers. It's the first time North Texas has recorded 10 or more blocks in a game since Jan. 1, 2021.
Jaaucklyn Moore posted nearly half of the block total for UNT, finishing with a career-high five blocks on the night. She became the first Mean Green player with five blocks in a game since Tommisha Lampkin against SMU in 2022.
Lampkin recorded her ninth double double of the season in the win, totaling 17 points and 11 rebounds on the night. Moore's night consisted of 15 points, which all came in the second half, including 12 points alone in the third quarter.
Behind Moore's scoring effort in the third, North Texas erased a 28-20 halftime deficit to take a 44-40 lead into the fourth quarter. The Mean Green capped the quarter on a 18-2 run, sparked by their defensive effort that forced Rice into turnovers on five of its final six possessions.
Shadasia Brackens played an important role in the third-quarter comeback, bringing a spark of energy off the bench. Despite only playing six minutes, Brackens scored eight points, had a rebound and a block and was a key factor in forcing the Owls into turnovers.
The Mean Green were able to overcome a sour trend, earning their first win of the season when trailing at the half. UNT's 61 points were also the fewest points scored in a win during the Burton era.
Wednesday's win improved North Texas to 13-5 on the season and 5-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while dropping Rice to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in league play. UNT also remained undefeated at home in AAC play with a matchup against Wichita State Saturday at 2 p.m. in The Super Pit on the horizon.
