The Mean Green improved to 10-1 at The Super Pit this season
DENTON, Texas — The UNT women's basketball team continued its hot streak at home defeating Wichita State, 80-58, on Saturday at The Super Pit.
The Mean Green (14-5, 6-1 AAC) used a 27-point third quarter, their highest scoring output in a quarter in conference play this season, to pull away in the contest. Desiree Wooten led North Texas with 10 points in the quarter and for the game with 17. UNT's top scorer this season, Tommisha Lampkin, matched Wooten's 17 points on the night.
After taking a 2-0 lead on the first basket of the game, the Shockers (7-13, 1-6 AAC) did not lead again for the remainder of the contest.
UNT took a 13-point lead into halftime, already in control by double digits.
"I challenged our team today to come out and put together a dominating win, one that we won by double figures," head coach Jason Burton said. "We felt like we have been playing better and better — we played in a lot of close games and for us, we have to get to a point where we don't get a lead and get comfortable."
Kyla Deck got back to form with 13 points in her second game since missing four games with an injury. Deck went 2-5 from beyond the arc on the day, finishing with 13 points.
The win marked the second consecutive game where the Mean Green defense held their opponent under 60 points, after limiting Rice to 53 points on Wednesday. Meanwhile, UNT reached 80 points for the sixth time this season, including the second time in conference play, previously reaching the mark versus Tulsa on Jan. 1.
With the win, UNT improved to 6-1 to start conference play for the second consecutive season, and just the third time in program history. The Mean Green also earned the program's 599th career victory on Saturday.
North Texas will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to face off against FAU on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. The contest tips off at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+ and the Varsity Network App.
