Two other UNT athletes tied program records at the meet
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – UNT thrower Jake Parchman set a program record in the weight throw to lead the Mean Green track and field teams in their season opener at the Arkansas Invitational on Friday.
Parchman broke his own school record on his fourth attempt of the meet, but would surpass that distance on each of his final two throws as well. His best mark of 20.44 meters came on his final throw and resulted in a first-place finish to start his final season of eligibility.
The Mean Green took a young squad to Fayetteville where over 10 true freshmen made their collegiate debuts along with a handful of transfers making their first appearances at North Texas.
Notably, freshman sprinter Trezeguet Taylor impressed in her debut with a third-place finish in the 60 meters. She opened the day in the qualifier round with a 7.59, before improving her time to 7.54 in the prelims to advance to the finals. There she clocked a 7.48, which is just three-hundredths of a second off the school record time of 7.45 that Missy Barnes set in 2010.
Jaylen Washington also made some noise in the 60 meters, earning gold for the Mean Green in the event. He posted a time of 6.67 in the preliminary and final races, which tied Karlington Anunagba's program record.
Also tying a program record was Sam Houston State transfer Hendrick Hundl in the 60-meter hurdles. The sophomore's time of 7.93 in the final was good for third place and matched Joseph Squire's record from the 2021 Conference USA Indoor Championships.
North Texas collected several other top-five finishes in a variety of events, including from a pair of freshman jumpers in Lyric Cheeks, who placed fourth in the triple jump, and Nykaela Mays, who placed fifth in the high jump.
"I was proud of how we fought and competed against some of the best talent in the nation," head coach Doug Marshall said. "It was a good opener to build on for the rest of the season. We talked about competing and letting the numbers come, and I thought our athletes did a good job at that today. We had some good things happen across every event group and that's what makes a true team in our sport. We will go back and evaluate where we need to improve and work toward that at Texas Tech next week."
UNT will travel to Lubbock, Texas next week for the Red Raider Invite, which will take place on Friday, Jan. 24.
