Freshman Hits Late Equalizer to Draw Tulsa

DENTON, Texas — Freshman defender Lillian Vandiver picked a good time to net her first collegiate goal for the Mean Green on Sunday afternoon.
The reigning American Freshman of the Week sent a rocket off her right foot into the back of the Tulsa net in the 81st minute to give her team the equalizer in what ended up a 1-1 draw with the Golden Hurricane.
Vandiver earned the weekly award from the conference for notching her first collegiate assist in last week's win over Temple and added her first collegiate goal on Sunday to collect a point for the Mean Green with four regular-season matches remaining.
"I honestly didn't know where goalie was at all," Vandiver said. "I just saw a wall of blue and pink, so I just hit it as hard as I could and put it on frame. I just wanted to keep it low."
UNT (5-9-2, 1-4-1) outshout Tulsa (7-4-5, 2-2-3), 23-16, and had five more corners than Tulsa but had trouble finding the back of the net until Vandiver's laser with less than 10 minutes to play. That came minutes after sophomore Emma King hit a rocket from outside the box off the Tulsa crossbar. The 23 shots by UNT were the fifth-most in a single game this season and the most since the Mean Green had 27 on Sept. 13, in a 1-1 draw at NJIT.
"I'm really proud of our team's effort and fight today, especially wearing our pink today," head coach John Hedlund said. "The girls played hard for a great cause, Breast Cancer Awareness. We threw everything at Tulsa today. They're a good team. Their offense is easily the second best in our conference, especially with all the seniors they can put up front. I'm proud of our freshman Lillian, who scored a great goal from distance to get us the tie. We will rest up and host Rice next week, then hit the road and see if we can get some results."
The Mean Green were up a player on Tulsa after Lauren McIntyre's second yellow sent her off in the 65th minute, and from that point, the Mean Green attack opened up.
The teams played to a scoreless draw at halftime, before Tulsa opened the scoring in the 56th minute on a loose ball in front of the net that Jordan Frederick collected and put in the back of the UNT net to add to her national lead in points this season.
UNT will have a week off before its next match, when it hosts Rice (9-2-3, 3-1-3) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
