Mean Green Pick Up Point After Draw With Rice
10/19/2025 3:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DENTON, Texas — Needing points to move up in the American standings in the season's final weeks, the UNT soccer team earned one after playing to a 2-2 draw against rival Rice on Sunday at home.
The Mean Green (5-9-3, 1-4-2) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when sophomore Claire Niedermeier netted her fifth goal of the season in the 20th minute, but the Owls quickly answered one minute later when Leah Chancey scored her ninth goal of the year to pull Rice within 2-1.
Rice (9-2-4, 3-1-4) scored again in the 29th minute and then both teams traded chances for the remainder of the game as both goalkeepers tallied four saves on the day.
UNT had a goal overturned in the 7th minute when sophomore Emma King chased down a loose ball, after a Rice defender was tripped up, and put it in the back of the net. The goal was overturned as King was called for a foul upon review after a Rice challenge.
Junior Mia Bernard opened the scoring in the 15th minute with her team-leading sixth goal of the year after she took a pass from Rachel Roebuck, headed it directly to her foot and scored on a volley from just inside the box for a brilliant goal.
"I thought the way the girls played today throughout the entire game was outstanding and we definitely deserved the win," head coach John Hedlund said. "Emma's goal that was taken away from us should have been allowed, but we will unfortunately take the tie against a solid Rice team that was ranked top 25 nationally a few weeks ago."
UNT outshot Rice, 19-10, and had 10 second-half shots but the Mean Green couldn't duplicate their first-half finishing success. Still, the Mean Green kept their unbeaten streak at home against the Owls, as they are now 6-0-3 all-time in Denton and lead the all-time series against Rice 9-5-5.
The Mean Green will next hit the road to The Sunshine State, where they will take on South Florida (7-7-1, 3-3-1) on Thursday and then will play FAU (4-9-3, 1-4-2) next Sunday before heading home for the final regular-season match on Oct. 30, against UAB (5-4-6, 2-2-3).
